Workforce Development

With support from the PA Department of Education, SHINE is collaborating with Temple University's Center for Social Policy and Community Development and the Institute for Schools in Society on a new workforce development initiative.

Project SHINE recruits, trains and supports student and older adult instructors responsible for teaching two classes per week of 5-10 adult English learners. Each class will be 2 hours long and take place at a community site, accessible by public transportation.  Instructors will receive training on teaching English for the purpose of finding and retaining employment; preparing lesson plans and materials; and conducting assessments to measure progress.  For PA Workstudy students, class preparation and training hours will be paid in addition to instructional time for a total of 8-10 hours a week.  Classes will begin in September and be held in three cycles, lasting (September - November; December - February; March - May) for 12 weeks each cycle.  Immigrant students are particularly encouraged to apply.  Candidates with experience in tutoring, classroom instruction or those with personal experience learning a second language are preferred.
