College students from diverse backgrounds and disciplines tutor in English, U.S. history, and civics at community centers, churches, senior residences and ESL classes to help older immigrants acquire citizenship and become more actively engaged in their communities.
Americorps Members - tutor English to build health communication skills and promote healthy aging of older immigrants/refugees. Members serve 9-10 hours per week, attend monthly SHINE trainings, and receive a $1,500 stipend and an education award of $1,132 upon completion. Those who are bilingual, bicultural, and/or working towards a career in health are in high demand! To learn more click here.
Workforce Instructors - teach English to immigrants and refugees aged 40+ for the purpose of finding and retaining employment. They will also develop lesson plans and conduct assessments to measure learner progress. PA work study students can get paid for 8-10 hours/week including class prep and training time. Classes will be held for 12 weeks in each of three cycles: September - November; December - February; and March - May.
