Across Ages in Santiago Chile
Across Ages, the Center’s award winning, evidence-based intergenerational mentoring approach to prevention, has already been replicated in over 90 communities across the United States and is now going international! In August, 2011, Dr. Andrea Taylor, Across Ages Developer/Director, and Corita Brown, Assistant Director of the Center’s Communities for All Ages initiative spent a week at the University of the Andes in Santiago Chile to train employees from the Chilean Ministry of Health in the implementation of the Across Ages model. CONASE, the drug prevention division of the Ministry of Health, plans to pilot Across Ages in four regions of Chile with the goal of replicating the model throughout the country if the pilots are successful. The training included significant discussion with the training participants about strategies for program adaption that would work effectively within the Chilean culture. Overall, it was a great learning experience for all involved.
Dr. Jorge Gaete, professor of Psychiatry at the University of the Andes, hosted the week-long training. He will be designing a research study of the Across Ages in Chile and will be working closely with CONASE to adapt the model, with on-going technical assistance provided by Dr. Andrea Taylor. Dr. Gaete is also interested in starting an intergenerational center at The University of the Andes.
